Young MIAS Member Spotlight on Genesis Martinez!
This month, we’re excited to feature Genesis Martinez, an Associate in the Miami office of Akerman LLP and a member of the firm’s Litigation practice group. Genesis is a proud Panther, holding both an undergraduate degree and a J.D. from Florida International University.
While Genesis has experience in various areas of litigation, she specializes in international litigation and focuses her practice on commercial litigation and arbitration across the United States and Latin America. Genesis has also coordinated and directed the prosecution and defense of cases involving civil actions and criminal actions for both individual and corporate clients. The market has taken note of her litigation prowess. Indeed, Genesis was recently listed as “One to Watch” for Commercial Litigation by The Best Lawyers in America for 2024.
Prior to joining Akerman, Genesis clerked for the Honorable Judge Beth Bloom, U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Florida. There, she gained experience in drafting opinions and orders in various areas of federal law. Prior to this work, Genesis was a trial attorney at the Department of Justice Civil Tax Division where she was hired through the Attorney General’s Honors Program. In that role, she gained experience with civil tax litigation in U.S. district courts and U.S. bankruptcy courts in suits involving tax and bankruptcy laws, as well as contract, commercial, and property laws. She was awarded a Special Commendation Award by the U.S. Department of Justice in connection with her work at the Tax Division.
Outside of work, Genesis enjoys spending time with her two golden doodles, Honey and Theodore. She also enjoys trying new cuisines and restaurants. She is a self-proclaimed “Foodie.”

Favorite Restaurant in Miami:
This is the toughest question I’ll ever be asked. How can I ever pick one favorite?! I can give you my top two restaurants in Miami. My all time favorite is Hillstone in Coral Gables. You can never go wrong with a Hawaiian Ribeye and a lemon drop martini from Hillstone. My new favorite is Sunny’s Steakhouse. This is a more modern twist on a steakhouse. The food, drinks, and service are exceptional. I can’t pick a favorite dish because everything at Sunny’s is delicious.
